Bing Crosby Is Still Winning Christmas
The database holds 24,060 release groups with Christmas in the title (counting Weihnachten, Noël, Navidad, joulu, and the rest of the December multilingual bloc). December is when nobody *releases* records — the Christmas catalog is built in October, sold in December, and re-compiled forever. Who has the most?
Bing Crosby — dead since 1977 — leads with 135, nearly one in five of everything bearing his name. "White Christmas" built the genre's economics (the most-artists Christmas recording ever is the song, and the biggest catalog is its singer), and the reissue industry has re-wrapped his Decca sessions annually for seventy years. He is less a recording artist at this point than a seasonal utility.
The list beneath him is three industries in a trench coat. The crooner economy (Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Como, Mathis, Andy Williams, Dean Martin): one good 1950s Christmas session, recompiled per decade. The choral-liturgical complex (Tabernacle Choir, King's College Cambridge, the Vienna Boys, and — on a technicality — J.S. Bach, whose 129 "Christmas releases" are mostly the Christmas Oratorio being recorded by everyone forever; Arcangelo Corelli rides in the same sleigh on the strength of one Christmas Concerto from 1690). And the pure December business: Mannheim Steamroller, whose catalog is 29% Christmas by volume — the highest ratio of any major act — a band that is, functionally, a holiday.
And then, blinking in the winter light, Marillion with 27 — more Christmas releases than Ella Fitzgerald. No, neo-progressive rock did not conquer the holiday: since the late '90s the band has mailed its fan club an exclusive Christmas album every year, and MusicBrainz's completists have entered every one. Twenty-odd years of "happy Christmas from Marillion" now outweigh the entire Elvis December estate in sheer catalog. The war on Christmas was won by direct mail.
